The Youth Commission was established in 1995 to provide for communication between
Yucca Valleys elected officials and the young people of the community. The
Commission is defined in Chapter 4, Section 12 of the Yucca Valley Municipal
Code.
Students in grades 7 through 12 who attend school in Yucca Valley are eligible to
serve on the Yucca Valley Youth Commission. Previous commissioners may be reappointed
to serve additional terms. Appointments are made in September of each year for Youth
Commission members through the school year. The Youth Commission is not active in the
summer months.
Each year, the commissioners jointly determine what they want to accomplish during
their term. The objectives are generally based on creative and effective ways to
communicate with the young people of the community, and with local government
officials.
In recent years, the Youth Commission has produced informative video programs aired
on local cable television channels, developed and presented forums to local schools,
conducted research about developing a teen center, and coordinated special events
with positive messages to youth.
The Youth Commission meets regularly with Town of Yucca Valley staff members in
formal public meetings and in less formal workshops. Monthly reports are presented
to the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Commission and an annual report is given to
the Town Council.
Meetings are at 6:30 pm on the first Monday of each month and workshops are scheduled
as needed. All Youth Commission meetings are open to the public and the local residents
are encouraged to provide input.
